Double meaning with the title. Miles is both the Latin word for soldier or an (awfully) English name that might possibly be derived from the Latin. I'm still wondering whether it was a good choice, for Soldier would sound to detached for the subject, but a name might be too intimate.

Drawn with charcoal from a reference from wikimedia: [link] onto a piece of 18 by 24 90lb. cream drawing paper. I rasterbated the image for a which large, quite aesthetically pleasing poster.

Wooot! Tis the soldier man!

My only critique: I think the background would have looked better at the bottom. The guy is really detailed at the top, not so much at the base, and I think having the bkgd at the top actually detracts the attention from it.

It's like....he needs agro or somethin.

Love the shade work on the shoulder bits. Looks a bit too fuzzy on the main back panels though, not much of a metallic feel to it in compairison.

Excellent work! Bravo Zulu!

You've got great values on the figure. Charcoal can be a very unforgiving medium but you've done a wonderful job with it here. I especially like the very soft horizon line that suggests a distant background with the appropriate atmospheric perspective.

I don't know if you've ever heard of this, but there's something called the "thousand-mile stare." It's a term applied to veterans who have a certain quality to their gaze... eyes that have seen bloodshed and terror. I've seen it up close and personal a few times. This picture immediately reminded me of that sort of man. A Roman soldier probably saw a lot of conflict in his short (the average Roman citizen usually lived to the ripe old age of 40) life. Although the figure's back it to me, I feel that he has that "thousand-mile stare" from the composition and the very distant background. Perhaps he's looking forward to an uncertain future or else back to the comfort and safety of home? It makes me wonder and draws me into the piece.
